How this website began: Back in 1997, I had started university and was surfing the Internet, trying to find pages for this, one of my favourite series. What did I find? Close to nothing. Understandably annoyed, considering that in comparison there are billions of Teletubby pages, I decided that the 1969 series was well overdue its own homepage and went about writing it up from scratch. So what's it all about? I hear you scream. OK, let's start at the beginning...

Picture the scene: it was the late 60's. Detective and secret agent series such as The Saint were a dime a dozen. Randall and Hopkirk (deceased) was one of them; but uniquely, one of the detectives, Marty Hopkirk (played by Kenneth Cope), gets killed off in the first episode!

Not much of a premise for a series, you say. Well, here's the twist: Marty comes back as a ghost, who only his partner Jeff Randall can see or hear, to help catch the people who murdered him - and ends up helping him out on a permanent basis! This, while it leads to Jeff having a distinct advantage in some situations, has made his life a tad awkward at best...

Unfortunately, only 26 episodes were made between 1969 and 1970. The view of the show's humour regarding death at the time was generally rather dim - TV executives, especially in the USA (where it was shown as My Partner The Ghost), thought the series took death just a little too lightly - but that didn't stop it surviving as one of ITC's most successful series, and still has fans all over the world, from the UK to Poland, no less; the USA and Australia.

Marty Hopkirk realises England lost again... The BBC recently made a 30th anniversary version of this classic series, with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer of Shooting Stars fame taking the lead roles of Marty and Jeff respectively, while Tom Baker played the role of a new character, psychic guru Wyvern. This new 6-episode series, written by Charlie Higson (The Fast Show), received mixed reviews when it ran on BBC1 in March of 2001, but a second season is currently in production. There's no news as to when or if it will be shown in the USA, but there have been rumours.

I'm the first to admit it, I'm a really sad and tragic fan, of the type that only the British can produce. I know daft things (like Jeff Randall's car type and registration number. Now that's sad!) But then, sad fans like us are what keeps these shows going and this website growing. Got a suggestion or a burning question? Come to the Forum! Want some involved discussion? Join the mailing list!
